STREAM RESTORATION PLANS
The goals of a Restoration and Management Plan are:
- To summarize all important information on the watershed (water quality, history, geography, geology, etc.)
- To prioritize water quality problems in order of impact
- To present options and recommendations for stream restoration
- To provide a framework for future activities
It is very important that a watershed have an approved Restoration Plan in place. Although funding for projects is sometimes approved for watersheds that do not have a plan, nearly all funding agencies prefer that any restoration project is part of a plan.
The general steps involved in creating a Restoration and Management Plan are:
- Complete a Watershed Assessment
- Compile all existing data (including the Watershed Assessment and any historical information)
- Define the Goals and Expectations for the watershed (must include input from all interested groups, agencies, and individuals)
- Prioritize problems and analyze alternatives
- Provide recommendations for continued remediation
- Prepare the final report
The Restoration Plan also includes an estimate of costs for each recommended alternative.
