K & J
Project Overview
The purpose of this project was to construct four passive treatment systems for mine drainage discharges to Chest Creek and Rock Run, a tributary to Chest Creek. The project site is located in Chest Township in northern Cambria County. The passive treatment systems replace chemical treatment systems that were operated by K&J Coal Company, Inc. The installation of the passive treatment systems was one component of a Consent Order and Agreement signed by the PADEP, K&J Coal Company, Inc., and Seaboard Surety Company in May 2004.
Acid mine drainage at the site is characterized by low pH and moderate concentrations of mine drainage metals. The systems treat the acidity using limestone aggregate, settling ponds and wetlands. The primary limestone beds are designed with flushing systems that are intended to remove solids and increase the effectiveness and longevity of the systems.
The treatment systems were designed by Hedin Environmental and Minetech Engineers, with CADD services provided by Key Environmental. The general construction contractor was Stoy Excavating, of Somerset, PA. This project was comleted September 2006.
