K & J - Gaber Brown
This treatment system treats discharges to Rock Run. Two distinct discharges are treated by this system. The discharges are mixed in existing ponds and conveyed from their current location to the treatment system.
Two vertical flow limestone ponds are followed by a settling pond. The vertical flow limestone beds contain a total of 6,000 tons of limestone and are equipped with separate plumbing systems that are used to flush solids from the limestone.
The flushing systems discharge to an independent flushing pond that retain these solids. A 10,000-ton oxic limestone bed follows the settling pond. The purpose of this bed is to remove manganese and add alkalinity. After the oxic limestone bed, the water flows through a polishing wetland before being discharged to Rock Run. As part of the construction effort of this system, an existing highwall and several acres of adjacent spoil were reclaimed.
This area was completed in November 2004.
