FARMINGTON
The purpose of this project was to assess Walley Run and Little Coon Run, two tributaries of Coon Creek that flow through Farmington Township, Clarion County. Both streams are impacted by numerous acid mine drainage (AMD) seeps and gas wells which discharge AMD. Farmington Township was the sponsor of this project, which was funded by the Growing Greener Program.
Hedin Environmental and Farmington Township personnel performed a stream walk of all affected streams, established and installed monitoring stations, and collected monthly samples for a period of one year. In addition, biological surveys were conducted by Confluence Ecological.
This assessment resulted in a Restoration Plan that prioritizes the discharges and provides preliminary design and remediation information. The plan contains preliminary designs and costs for six priority projects, including four reclamation projects, a gas well plugging project and one treatment system The plan was completed in June 2003.
In 2005, DEP funded a grant to install a passive system at the #1 priority site, LC20D. The system was designed, bid, and constructed. Treatment was initiated in spring 2007. The Passive System is removing 100 lb/day of acidity and 60 lb/day of Fe from Little Coon Run.
