CHARTIERS CREEK

In 1991, Hedin Environmental, working with GAI Consultants, Inc., conducted an assessment of large polluted deepmine discharges in the lower Chartiers Creek Watershed. The assessment included the collection of a year's flows and chemistry for nine large discharges and the collation of mine maps so that the hydrogeology of each discharge was understood.
In 2004, He and GAI developed the assessment results and additional information regarding stream and tributary quality impacts into a restoration plan. The document determined the environmental impact significance of each discharge, developed conceptual remediation plans, and prioritized the remediation projects. The report was submitted in 2006 to the PADEP.
Several projects have been implemented as an outcome of the plan. The Wingfield Pines Passive Treatment System was installed in 2009. The Fishing Run Mine Seal and Reclamation Project was completed in 2009. The Gladden Discharge Treatment Alternatives project was completed in 2010. Further Fishing Run reclamation projects are ongoing.
