BOTANICAL GARDENS

The Horticultural Society of Western Pennsylvania (HSWP) is currently developing a Botanical Garden.  The site is located on Allegheny County Property within North Fayette and Collier Townships.  The site has been mined for coal by underground and surface methods.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) flows from abandoned mines on the site and pollutes an unnamed tributary to Robinson Run, which is a major tributary to Chartiers Creek.  With financial support from the PA Department of Environmental Protection, the HSWP is investigating the AMD problem and developing a solution that can be incorporated into the master plan for the Botanical Garden.  The AMD assessment is being conducted by GAI Consultants, Inc. and Hedin Environmental.
